Packaging Carton CBM: Calculate Volume Before Ordering

Carton CBM is the outside length x width x height in metres, multiplied by the number of cartons. For cups, lids and other food packaging packed in different cartons, calculate each line separately and add the results. Product capacity in oz or mL cannot tell you the shipment volume.

This guide uses hypothetical packing figures to show the arithmetic for a wholesale packaging quotation. The figures are not LEMI carton specifications, freight rates or container-loading guarantees.

How do you calculate carton CBM from centimetres?

Measure the closed shipping carton's outside dimensions, including any bulge. If the measurements are in centimetres:

CBM per carton = length (cm) x width (cm) x height (cm) / 1,000,000.

An example carton measuring 60 x 40 x 50 cm occupies 0.120 m3. Twenty identical cartons occupy 2.400 m3 before palletisation. In metres the same calculation is 0.60 x 0.40 x 0.50 x 20.

UPS explains CBM as a volume measurement and instructs shippers to calculate different-sized items separately. Use the final packed measurements, not the dimensions of an empty product, an unfolded box blank or an unfilled inner sleeve.

Worked example: cups and lids shipped separately

Suppose the confirmed order needs 20,000 cups and 20,000 matching lids. The following packing quantities and dimensions are deliberately illustrative.

Example linePieces per cartonCartonsOuter carton (cm)Line volume
20,000 cups1,0002060 x 40 x 5020 x 0.120 = 2.400 CBM

Leaving the lid cartons out would understate this example by 0.800 CBM, or 25% of its total carton volume. Keep the cup and lid lines separate even when your sales quote expresses the product as a set.

For small sauce containers, the same method applies. Our portion cup order-planning guide explains how to round piece demand up to cup and lid cartons before calculating shipment volume.

How can you compare two different packing configurations?

Compare volume per 1,000 pieces of the same specified item, then calculate the actual order with whole cartons. A smaller carton does not automatically mean less shipping space if it contains fewer pieces.

CBM per 1,000 pieces = carton CBM / pieces per carton x 1,000.

Hypothetical packingCarton volumePieces per cartonCBM per 1,000 pieces
A: 60 x 40 x 50 cm0.1201,0000.120
B: 50 x 40 x 40 cm0.0805000.160

Packing B uses a smaller carton but 33.3% more volume per 1,000 pieces in this example. That does not make A suitable for every product: protection, sleeve hygiene, stack strength and warehouse handling still matter. Compare like-for-like products, including the same lid and print configuration.

Flat-packed bakery boxes, nested cups and rigid containers have different packing structures. Ask for the supplied packing arrangement for each line rather than estimating from the product photo. See our bakery boxes, paper cups and portion cups when preparing a mixed order.

Is CBM the same as chargeable or dimensional weight?

No. CBM is volume. Gross weight includes the goods and packing. A carrier may convert volume to a dimensional weight and compare it with actual weight under the booked service's rules.

For example, DHL Express's published UK guidance uses length x width x height in centimetres divided by 5,000. Under that formula, the 60 x 40 x 50 cm example carton gives 24 kg dimensional weight. If it weighs 9 kg, the dimensional figure is larger. Other services may use a different divisor, rounding or billing basis; this is not a universal air- or ocean-freight formula.

For a mixed shipment, calculate each package under the selected service's method. Ask the forwarder for a quotation with the transport mode, route, chargeable basis and included charges identified. A CBM calculation alone is not a delivery price.

Can CBM tell you how many cartons fit in a 20-foot or 40-foot container?

Dividing a container's nominal internal volume by carton CBM gives only a theoretical volume ratio. It does not prove that the cartons will fit. Carton orientation, door clearance, pallet dimensions, loading gaps, stacking restrictions and weight limits can reduce the actual quantity.

For a container order, request a loading plan based on the confirmed outside carton dimensions and gross weights. For palletised freight, use the loaded pallet's outside dimensions and weight, including the pallet itself, when asking for the transport quote. Do not quote a fixed 20GP or 40HQ quantity from cup capacity alone.

What should appear on a wholesale packaging quotation?

  • Product line: cup, matching lid or complete set; material and dimensions tied to the selected reference.
  • Order and packing: pieces ordered, pieces per sleeve, sleeves per carton and whole cartons.
  • Shipment measurements: outside carton dimensions and gross weight for each different packing line.
  • Preparation: nested, assembled or flat-packed; loose cartons or palletised shipment.
  • Commercial scope: price currency, agreed delivery term and named place, freight inclusions and quotation validity.
  • Destination: country, delivery city or port, postal code where relevant and required delivery date.

A useful enquiry can be brief: "Please quote 20,000 cups with 20,000 matching lids. Show pieces per carton, outer carton dimensions, gross weights and total CBM separately for cups and lids. Delivery destination: [your city or port]." Replace the quantity with your actual requirement.

Send your packaging list to LEMI. For printed cups, use the custom paper cup quotation checklist to include artwork and construction details alongside the shipping information.
